Strawberry Woman

Strawberry Woman

In 2005, I had my native naming ceremony by a native Elder and pipe carrier by the name of Peter Migwans. It was one of the most powerful experiences in my life. After offering him tobacco (the native tradition for honouring our elders) and asking for my native name, I participated in a Sweat Lodge ceremony, followed by a pipe ceremony and then I was given my name –  Strawberry Woman. In Ojibway, my name is Demin’kwe.

I was told that the meaning of my name had to do with love because the strawberry is a heart-shaped berry. I was told that I had a big heart and that my life’s purpose is to do everything with that in mind – to always follow my heart and to do everything with love.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you all.
